The Tale of the Shepherd Boy

Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a boy named Shepherd. His being was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to care for his herd of ewes.

Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the gales through the solo tree on the hilltop were his only associates. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. On one such day from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plot.

Stories of predators preying on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no beast.

The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, click here no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
